Why Holding On To Old Technology Can Be Bad For Your Business

When we started On-Site Technical Solutions more than five years ago we spent quite a bit of time working on old hardware and getting old software to work on new hardware. We also supported residential customers.

Today we really don't do either. It's not cost effective for us and it's even less cost-effective for our customers. If a computer is more than three years old, it should already be scheduled (and budgeted) for replacement. When it starts having issues that lead to replacing parts or reloading the OS, it's time to replace the computer.

If a software vendor is not keeping up with changes in PC and server operating systems, it's time to move on to another vendor. This may cause short term heartache for the company CFO if he hasn't prepared for upgrading. But the mid and long term effects of trying to run on outdated hardware or software can wreck havoc with both budgets and productivity in any company.
