This question was asked on Merchant Circle and here was the reply from On-Site Technical Solutions:
Wireless signals can be affected by building construction and ambient signals in your network environment. We've had a couple of customers that simply could not set up a working wireless network.
Having said that, once you have an access point or wireless router in place it can be tough to successfully boost the signal. We've had the most success with replacing older wireless-G routers with wireless-N routers which have wider coverage and stronger signals.
You can try adding a signal booster or booster antenna for about $50, but we've had better luck moving to the N routers.
You can also try a powerline booster that uses your house electrical lines to boost the signal (and connect to the internet). We had success with this at a couple of locations.
Bottom line - if you're using a G router, upgrade to N before trying to boost the signal.
- When we answered this at Merchant Circle we assumed a residence or small business. If this is in a larger organization/building we'd recommend adding access points to ensure coverage throughout the organization. For residences and small businesses, the N routers have much better signal strength than the G routers.
