Is Flash Dead or Will it Rule the Web?

I'll admit I was leaning towards the Flash is dead view in the past few months and thought it would eventually be supplanted by HTML5. I started agreeing with reasoning that developers needing to create apps and sites for the Mac world (iPhone and iPad) had no reason to use Flash as a tool. HTML5 can be used to develop across multiple platforms, so why use a tool that can't be use on a significant mobile platform?

Adobe Flash, formerly Macromedia Flash, is a multimedia platform used to add animation, video, and interactivity to Web pages.

HTML5 is the latest iteration of what has been the language of the web, HTML and aims to reduce the need for proprietary plug-in-based rich internet application (RIA) technologies such as Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight.

Lately I've been able to discuss the direction of web development with developers who don't think Flash will be going away any time soon and will be very disappointed if it does. Since these are the people using the tools to develop web-based applications and websites, I'll have to agree with them at least in the short term.

Peter Wayner also comes down on the side of Flash in an article in Infoworld this week.

HTML5 vs. Flash: The case for Flash

Wayner lists the case for Flash with seven points that get somewhat technical, but that's how. developers will decide what tools to use. While the tools used by developers may seem transparent to most end users, how Apple, Adobe and other tech giants interact will have a great impact on the future of the development of the applications that we'll be running on our devices and the Internet in the near and more distant future.
