Keeping Our Smartphones Charged

As we get more use out of smart devices, we need to keep them powered even longer. At least through a full work day plus some play time at night. The batteries in most (all?) smartphones, if used even moderately, simply will not last that long.

PowerSkin

I've seen more published on iPhone and iPad chargers than Android, so here's a couple of tools I use to keep my Android smartphone powered all day long. When I started using the new Galaxy S 2 I bought a PowerSkin as a cover for the device.

This is the cover on my Android - PowerSkin® for Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket (AT&T). It looks like the typical rubbery cover that my wife doesn't like for some reason.

However, this one also doubles the life of the woefully inadequate Galaxy S 2 battery. I actually haven't had to use the New Trent charger described below for this phone because the PowerSkin keeps it going!

Here is the how-to video on the PowerSkin from Youtube.com. followed by information on the New Trent portable external battery.

The PowerSkin cost me $60 at the ATT Store.

New Trent External Battery

The New Trent devices are about the size of a smartphone - maybe a little thicker and a touch heavier. However, they pack a great charge - here's what New Trent says about their  New Trent iCruiser IMP1000 11000mAh External Battery Pack and Charger
  • 11000mAh capacity, Charge ipad 3 70%,Charge iPad 2 110%, Charge iPhone 4 600%
  • Compatible with 2G 3G 3Gs 4 4S iPhone
  • Compatible with iPad 2 and iPad
  • Compatible with all generation 2G 3G 4G 5G iPod touch
  • Compatible with Motorola Droid
  • Compatible with HTC Android (EVO, incredible, X1, nexus)
  • Compatible with Blackberry
  • Compatible with Samsung Galaxy Tablet (adapter is sold separately)
  • Compatible with Samsung Galaxy S, Nintendo, Sony PSP
  • 70% of iPad 3 battery life, 110% of iPad 2 Battery life
  • 600% of 4G 4S 3G 3Gs iPhone Battery life
  • 50 hours iPhone movie playing time
  • 19 hours iPad 2 movie playing time
  • 50 hours iPhone 4s internet time
  • 100 hours iPhone 4s audio time
I ended up getting an older ifuel IMP500 for $25 so I can only vouch for the Android devices, and New Trent charges them very quickly. Well worth the money spent so far.

These are a couple of devices I've found helpful, but Apple and Google (and even Microsoft)  fans will find any number of ways to keep their devices running all day - and at reasonable prices, as noted above.  Smartphone (and tablet) users have no reason to end up with dead batteries any more!
