Microsoft's Security Patch Tuesday

We haven't seen any problems, but just be aware that Microsoft unleashed a torrent of patches two days ago on Patch Tuesday.

Here is the Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary for October which includes 16 bulletins addressing issues in Windows, Internet Explorer, .Net Framework, Server Software and Office. Microsoft rates four of them critical, 10 important and two moderate.

While much of our business is moving to the Cloud, Windows still plays a critical role in most of our client's businesses. It's important to keep the Windows products up-to-date, especially with security patches. They can help avoid headaches down the road.

Netapplications Reports Chrome Usage up to 7.24% in June

Google Chrome browser is up to 7.24% of the world-wide market share behind Mozilla Firefox (23.81%) and Microsoft Internet Explorer (60.32%) according to Netapplications.

Microsoft actually gained market share in June, going from 59.75% to 60.32%, which Netapplications says may be the result of Microsoft's "Confidence" marketing campaign touting the security of Internet Explorer 8. Explorer is down from 66.97% in August of last year.

Although Chrome usage growth slowed to .2% in June, the Google browser has gone from 2.84% in August of 2009 to 7.24% last month.

Google Apps phasing out support for older browsers

Google is notifying Google Apps resellers that they will no longer be providing support for "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as other older browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers."

This actually makes sense - On-Site Technical Solutions customers using Google Apps are more up-to-date in their browsing environments than others. The only customers we have that don't stay relatively current in browser software are those using applications software that only supports older browsers. And we've managed to get most of those customers to better software vendors for their business applications.

Google is not communicating this directly to our customers, they're letting us - which we appreciate.

Here's the text of their notice to us - which, again, is a perfectly sound business decision.

In order to continue to improve our products and deliver more sophisticated features and performance, we are harnessing some of the latest improvements in web browser technology. This includes faster JavaScript processing and new standards like HTML5. As a result, over the course of 2010, we will be phasing out support for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as other older browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers.

We plan to begin phasing out support of these older browsers on the Google Docs suite and the Google Sites editor on March 1, 2010. After that point, certain functionality within these applications may have higher latency and may not work correctly in these older browsers. Later in 2010, we will start to phase out support for these browsers for Google Mail and Google Calendar.

Google Apps will continue to support Internet Explorer 7.0 and above, Firefox 3.0 and above, Google Chrome 4.0 and above, and Safari 3.0 and above.

Starting next week, users on these older browsers will see a message in Google Docs and the Google Sites editor explaining this change and asking them to upgrade their browser. We will also alert you again closer to March 1 to remind you of this change.

Microsoft makes privacy a priority in IE 8

Dennis Fisher at SearchSecurity.com tells us that "Microsoft is planning to add a significant number of privacy enhancements in Internet Explorer 8, including a new private browsing mode called InPrivate." Much of the additions can currently be handled manually in IE 7, but it can be time-consuming and who's going to go to the trouble?
