Google announced a new way to spend more money more easily with the introduction of the Google Wallet for smartphones. The Google Wallet website has a merchant video that focuses on how much fun it will be to use Google wallet. Faster, more secure and more FUN - what more can a consumer require?
Requesting more info asks if you're using Sprint (a Nexus S 4G by Google, specifically) and do you currently have a Citi MasterCard. I wouldn't expect to be in the Beta without fitting in both those categories.
The example used in the merchant video is typing "lunch" into the app at lunchtime and having offers delivered to the phone (specifically Subway in this example). Pick an offer, go have lunch and then simply hit a key in the app to pay and be on your way. No waiting for the check - or calculating the gratuity? That will actually be very helpful in some restaurants I've frequented - server, where's my check?
The immediate impact will be to use the smartphone in place of the MasterCard PayPass:
At first, Google Wallet will support both Citi MasterCard and a Google Prepaid Card, which you’ll be able to fund with almost any payment card. From the outset, you’ll be able to tap your phone to pay wherever MasterCard PayPass is accepted. Google Wallet will also sync your Google Offers, which you’ll be able to redeem via NFC at participating SingleTap™ merchants, or by showing the barcode as you check out. Many merchants are working to integrate their offers and loyalty programs with Google Wallet.
