Disaster recovery - built right in to Google Apps

The first thing we work on with new clients is ensuring that their data is backed up and they have a disaster recovery plan in place. This includes, at a minimum, having their data stored in at least two locations. Optimally one of the locations is updated through the Internet and then backed up and stored in another remote location by that vendor.

One of the negatives touted about cloud computing is security - is my data safe? If the right Cloud vendors are chosen, the answer is yes - safer than it would be on-site in almost any SMB. That is why picking the right vendors is crucial in moving to cloud computing.

Servers (or computers) stored in office buildings or manufacturing plants are safe until the building burns down or a thief takes the hardware and the data along with it.

Data stored with the right vendors in the cloud will only be accessible with login credentials established by the owner of the data. Stealing a server from the right data center will get the thief a rack-mounted server and parts of encrypted data from multiple clients, but complete or even usable data from none.

Here is a post from Google describing the disaster recovery components build into their product. We would suggest that Google Apps is a safe product from one of the vendors who get cloud computing.
