Valentine's Day Spam Now Arriving

Here are a couple of posts from the Trend Micro Blog, the first on the incoming Valentine's Day spam you'll want to avoid and a new exploitation of Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

If you work with On-Site Technical Solutions I must ask, what are you doing still using Internet Explorer?

Spammers return from year-end break

I was going to post on the recent downturn in spam (not that my spam filter noticed THAT much of a difference) when I started seeing articles on the upturn in spam for the new year.

I guess even cyber criminals take a break every once in a while - or at least celebrate the holidays!

Spammers return from year-end break

If you're having trouble with spam we recommend switching your mail to Google Apps for personal and business uses. Google purchased Postini a while back and we haven't found a better spam catcher. Best of all, it's FREE with Google Apps.

Get More Followers! No, Don't Do That...

Warning - this post includes whining/ranting about spam on Twitter.

If you'd like to guarantee that people worth following on Twitter ignore you, promote easy, passive money-making, including HOW TO GET MORE FOLLWERS!

If you're looking for 50,000 followers that ignore you, use an autofollow tool. What kind of followers are you going to get when you buy or subscribe to an autofollow tool? Chances are, lots of bots that are using an autofollow tool to follow your bot.

If you're trying to build a business other than affiliate marketing or easy, passive money on Twitter you're going to alienate the people you want and need to reach to build your business by using an autofollow tool.

Twitter is home to the new Internet MLMs, but that's not who I want to connect with in my social media - and unless you're in that business, that's not who you want, either.

When someone follows me I look at their home page and look for:
1) Affiliate marketing - ignore
2) Tweets - none or few? ignore
3) Tweets - a history of me me me tweets? ignore
4) A profile picture of a good looking young female that clearly is not the account owner? ignore
5) I discovered an easy way to make money and I'm sharing it with you website on the profile - ignore
6) No website in the profile, not even a blog - probably ignore

I've seen a couple of philosophies on following on Twitter. The first is to only follow accounts that you're really interested in and going to follow closely. This will limit the number of follows and lessen the need for lists to track your follows.

The second is to follow legitimate followers as a courtesy - almost like returning a hello. Will you be able to follow all of your follows once you get hundreds or thousands? Clearly not - but that's where lists and groups in tools like HootSuite allow you to track your most important follows. Having the larger group also gives you a chance to find interesting tweets from people you might not otherwise see.

The third would be the autofollow, and you can see above what I think about that... If there's a fourth, please let me know.

Although I tweet to build my business, On-Site Technical Solutions, I follow and tweet about personal issues too. That would include sports (especially HOCKEY), dogs and sustainability/science. And I've met some absolutely wonderful and brilliant people in my couple of months on Twitter. NOT with autofollow.

OK, enough ranting. You should follow me on Twitter here. Call or text me at 1-949-212-2168 and visit On-Site Technical Solutions.
