Microsoft's Security Patch Tuesday

We haven't seen any problems, but just be aware that Microsoft unleashed a torrent of patches two days ago on Patch Tuesday.

Here is the Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary for October which includes 16 bulletins addressing issues in Windows, Internet Explorer, .Net Framework, Server Software and Office. Microsoft rates four of them critical, 10 important and two moderate.

While much of our business is moving to the Cloud, Windows still plays a critical role in most of our client's businesses. It's important to keep the Windows products up-to-date, especially with security patches. They can help avoid headaches down the road.

Here are some articles on this Patch Tuesday:

Windows XP No Longer Available After October 22

Dell sent me a note reminding me that they will no longer be able to ship computers with the Windows XP Professional downgrade option after October 22. They said orders must be in by October 1, but I'll bet we get some play with that date, but don't count on October 22 moving. .

We still sell many systems with XP because almost none of our customers with servers have upgraded to Windows 7.

We'll miss Windows XP Pro, now that it works so well! We still have some issues with Windows 7 compatibility  with older peripherals and software. Just last week I tried to connect Josie's new Win 7 laptop to her Xerox Phaser at school and it looks like they're not compatible, even with the new Xerox printer downloads.

Of course, get a new printer and get in the Cloud and you won't have to worry about your operating system or Internet access device, formerly known as computer.

Create a Windows 7 Password Disk

We created this video a couple of months ago but this issue has come up a couple of times recently so we're posting it again. We haven't converted any of our server network customers to Windows 7 yet. But we have put a few Windows 7 systems on peripheral networks and it looks like Windows 7 will be OK.

Is Your Computer Ready for Windows 7?

Microsoft tells us that, in general, if we're running Windows Vista we can upgrade to Windows 7. For that sizable chunk of the world that will be bypassing Vista and going directly to Windows 7 from Windows XP, they have a tool.

Here's the link for the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor beta

If you haven't upgraded to Vista because your current computer doesn't have the horsepower (memory or cpu), forget about running Windows 7. buy a new computer when service pack one for Windows 7 is released.

Note the caveat from Microsoft... "Important: The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor Beta is a pre-release version, and is available in U.S. English only. While we consider this a stable and high-quality beta, it's not the finished product."
