More on Android vs iOS (iPhone)

We posted a couple of items recently about Android vs iOS:

The Register has an article looking at how the different approaches of  Google (open) and Apple (closed)  towards their smartphones will impact the long term prospects for the company lines.

Developers and other techies generally prefer open systems to closed systems, but in the long run it's the consumer that will determine who dominates the smart device market. The Register clearly believes the open system will win out in the end:

This isn't to suggest that Apple's iOS devices are going to disappear from store shelves anytime soon. Given Apple's likely deal with Verizon in the US, as well as its increasing willingness to distribute iOS devices through alternative channels like (gasp!) Wal-Mart, Apple is going to have a fantastic 2011.
But in the long run, Apple's business model disadvantage is going to cost it market share. Today, the world covets Apple's shiny devices but with credible, more than "good enough" Android alternatives hitting the market en masse, it's just a matter of time before Google's "open and free" approach to handset manufacturers and carriers wins out.
It's not clear that Apple can do much to stop Google. The two companies compete in vastly different ways, and while Google has found a way to undermine Apple's shiny, simplified device experience, Apple has done little to combat Google's approach.

The BlackBerry Torch 9800 Arrives

It looks like the new BlackBerry Torch is an acceptable alternative for smartphones, but won't be a savior for BlackBerry sales going forward.

BlackBerry has been the enterprise choice for mobile for years because of its ability to handle email and remains a key player. RIM, the manufacturer of BlackBerrys, lost critical time to both Apple and Android by waiting this long to come out with the Torch. They haven't given anyone a reason to move from another platform to BlackBerry, which will be cause for concern in the future.

At On-Site Technical Solutions we're going to have iPhones, Droids and BlackBerrys, but the kids are going to make me be the resident BlackBerry holder. That shouldn't make BlackBerry very happy. As Gizmodo noted in its review,

If you don't already own a BlackBerry, you will not want this phone. And if you do, you still might not want it, even if it may very well be the "best BlackBerry ever."

Here are some links to reviews of the new BlackBerry:

Will The iPhone be Coming to Verizon?

The NY Times article below has an interesting take on Verizon's competition with ATT that also touches on the future of the iPhone's potential carrier homes. this article suggests that Verizon is solidifying its partnership with Google, perhaps at the expense of a future with Apple and the iPhone.

Because Verizon is making inroads into ATT's market share without the iPhone, it may not need to partner with Apple and may continue to simply partner with Google and the Droid. We're seeing wonderful things in the Android platform and we will soon be an iPhone and Droid company. That's one of the reasons I've expressed confidence in the arrival of lower cost competition to the iPad. We'll be able to sit back and watch the giants slug it out, hopefully to our benefit with better apps and devices as well as lower prices.

Here's the NY Times article: Even Without iPhone, Verizon Is Gaining on ATT

More competition for the iPad later this year?

It looks like Research in Motion  is going to be coming out with a Blackberry tablet later this year.

From The Register:
More details are emerging about Research in Motion's long-rumored BlackBerry tablet: it will have a seven-inch display, both back- and front-facing cameras, and will support hardware-accelerated Adobe Flash.
I don't claim to understand Apple's hatred of Flash, but if I have a choice between a tablet that supports it and one that doesn't, I'll take the one that supports it. Especially if it's less expensive!

Here are links to articles on the rumored Blackberry tablet.

iPhone As Credit Card

Starbucks sent me an email (yes, I frequent Starbucks - no Dunkin' out here!) explaining how I can use my iPhone to pay for my purchases at Starbucks in Target Stores.

This really isn't an ad for Starbucks, by my wonderment at how the world of technology is changing. Whether I'm using an iPhone, droid or Blackberry, my smartphone will be a significant part of my connection to the world. Which smartphone I use will probably end up being a result of which vendor has the app I need - for my business or personal life.

Businesses that underestimate the importance of  mobile computing to finding and connecting with their customers will be losing a significant competitive advantage in the short term. In the longer term our mobile computing will simply be a part of most everyone's lives.

Just download the application, enter your Starbucks Card number and your iPhone™ 'becomes' your Starbucks Card (showing a barcode you hold up at the checkout to pay).
With the application, you not only have the ability to pay at your nearest Target® Starbucks store with your phone, but you can also register your card, check your balance, reload it using your credit card, and enjoy rewards like free brewed coffee refills.
Now you can pay using the Starbucks Card Mobile App on your iPhone™/iPod touch® at your nearest Starbucks location in Target® stores. It's revolutionary. It's fast. So fast you could probably call, pay and sip all in one go.

Unable to verify certificate - Google Mail and iPhone

Here at On-Site Technical Solutions we're running into the "Unable to verify certificate" dialog on the iPhone using Google mail (both Google Apps and Gmail). This error is also seen when you create an exchange active sync e-mail account from the settings app on your iPhone. The mobile support page from Google shows how to setup an Apps e-mail account, and describes the certificate error.

If you're using an iPhone and Google mail and get this error message, choose accept. Apparently Google is constantly updating their certificates in an effort to fight spam and this error message on the iPhone is one result. It also looks like some iPhone clients run into this repeatedly and others have yet to see it. Luck of the draw?

iPhone Software Update May Fix Frustrating Bugs

Apple is distributing iPhone software update 2.1 to developers that Apple says will fix bugs as well as add features to the phone. We posted earlier about the frustration some userw were having with the new iPhone:

iPhone Security Flaw and Poor Reception Issues

iPhone users hope that the updates will improve the 3G signal strenth and help reduce the number of dropped calls, as Apple expects.

Here are a couple of links to articles on the iPhone updates:

iPhone Security Flaw and Poor Reception Issues

It takes only 3 taps to gain access to locked iPhones running the latest 2.02 iPhone software.

iPhone security flaw exposes private data

Apparently there's some debate on why the new 3G iPhones are getting poor reception and dropping calls. Some are blaming the ATT network, while others are blaming the iPhone itself. Since the problem appears to be occuring in other parts of the world, it sure sounds like the iPhone has some issues - not that ATT is blameless. It drops plenty of calls on my Blackberry!
